About Acupuncture
Is acupuncture safe?
Absolutely! — when administered by a well trained, licensed Acupuncturist who has undergone the required 4 years undergraduate college plus 4 years graduate education and an internship in Asian and Western medicine. In order to become licensed, acupuncturists are also required to pass a difficult State Medical Board Examination. All Licensed Acupuncturists use only sterile, disposable needles and are taught safe and effective needling techniques.
What problems are treatable with acupuncture?
Acupuncture helps balance the body’s internal functions thus supporting its ability to heal itself. Therefore, most conditions can be improved and/or ultimately resolved by including acupuncture treatments. Acupuncture is best known for successfully reducing/resolving pain, stress, inflammation and addictions. There is a growing body of research demonstrating acupuncture’s ability to increase immune functions, general wellness and reduce the severity of many chronic illnesses. Knowledgeable acupuncturists can successfully treat very complicated health problems.
Do acupuncture needles hurt?
Only like a pinch. The pain sometimes originates more in the minds of people — especially those who have learned to fear needles. They often flinch even before the needles are inserted. Many others feel nothing. In fact, they often ask, “Are the needles in yet?”
How does acupuncture work?
The human body is like a generator circulating its energy in an endless circuit throughout every part of the body — even at cellular levels. This energy drives all of the body’s internal functions. If a break or overload in the circuit occurs, certain body organs and functions cease to function optimally which leads to various kinds of “signs and symptoms” and possible illnesses because certain body parts are no longer receiving adequate nutrients and energy to function normally. The insertion of acupuncture needles at the appropriate and strategic “acupuncture points” serve to “reconnect the dots” so that the body’s circuit of health is repaired.
How long does it take to get well using acupuncture?
As a rule it takes 1 month of treatment for each year the problem has existed. Also, 1) Recent injuries and illnesses heal faster than long existing ones. 2) Strong and younger people heal faster than exhausted, weak or old people. 3) Getting the recommended number of treatments close together helps healing. 4) Correct diet, exercise, rest and herbs hasten healing. 5) The level of knowledge and skill of the acupuncturists influences healing.
Common Ways of Stimulating Acupuncture points
Inserting various lengths of needles into acupuncture points. Electric wires can be clipped to the needles to deliver a stronger impulse. This is electro-acupuncture.
Moxibustion. Burning therapeutic herbs near acupuncture points.
Cupping. Using inverted suction cups on acupuncture points.
Acupressure. Using fingers on acupuncture points.
